That thick, crusty buildup lining the inside of a pipe is called scale - and it's one of the sneakier problems a drain system can have. It doesn't happen overnight. It builds up slowly over time, mineral deposit by mineral deposit, until the pipe opening shrinks down to a fraction of what it should be. By the time you notice slow drains or backups, the restriction is already serious.

This is exactly the kind of situation where a standard snake just won't cut it. Snaking through built-up scale punches a hole through the blockage but leaves the walls coated. Flow improves temporarily, then slows right back down. That's a band-aid, not a fix.

We're going after this one with chain knockers and hydrojetting. The chain knocker spins and chips away at the hardened scale on the pipe walls, and then the high-pressure water blast from the hydrojet flushes everything out completely. It's the right combination for scale this heavy - aggressive enough to actually clear the walls, not just poke through.

Situations like this are also a good reminder of why sewer camera inspections matter. Without putting eyes inside the pipe, you're guessing at what's causing the problem. A camera tells us exactly what we're dealing with - scale, grease, root intrusion, or something else entirely - so we can use the right approach from the start.

We'll be posting the after on this one, so stay tuned. If your drains are sluggish or backing up and you're not sure why, this is the kind of thing worth getting looked at before it turns into a full sewer back-up situation.
